About

But why? is a blog about bad UX in 2026. More code than ever is being written by AI, prototypes go to production overnight, and "good enough to demo" has quietly become good enough to ship. Somewhere along the way the person actually using the software seems to have dropped off the list, even at companies that could easily afford to care.

Or so it seems. That's what we want to find out. Each post takes one frustrating interaction, like a broken flow, a dark pattern, a chatbot where a button used to be or a redesign nobody asked for, and asks the question everyone has muttered at a screen: but why?

We try not to stop at complaining. For every example we look at what human–computer interaction research has to say: which principle is being broken, why teams end up shipping it anyway, and what a better version could look like. Most of that research is decades old, and it still holds up.
